Building in Florida’s Climate: Expert Insights from Galileus

Constructing commercial buildings in Florida presents a distinct set of challenges due to the state’s unique climate. From the constant threat of hurricanes to managing high humidity, businesses must navigate a broad spectrum of environmental considerations, explains Jorge Artieda, CEO of Galileus Construction.

What makes Florida´s climate particularly challenging for construction?

«Florida’s climate is a double-edged sword,» explains Jorge Artieda. «While we enjoy favorable weather for much of the year, the region is also prone to hurricanes, extreme heat, and pervasive humidity. These factors demand meticulous attention to building materials and design strategies.»

The key, Artieda emphasizes, is resilience. «Incorporating elements such as reinforced concrete structures, impact-resistant windows, and hurricane shutters is essential to withstand storms and high winds. Florida’s building codes are among the strictest in the nation, precisely because we must plan for worst-case scenarios.»

How do you approach flood mitigation in Florida´s low-lying areas?

«Flooding poses a significant risk, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas that are prone to heavy rainfall during hurricane season,» Artieda explains. «We start by assessing the site’s elevation and proximity to flood zones. In many cases, we recommend elevating the building’s foundation and incorporating advanced drainage systems to manage water runoff effectively.»

Collaborating with engineers to implement flood-resistant construction techniques is another priority. «We utilize water-resistant materials, engineer efficient drainage solutions, and design retention areas to mitigate flood risks,» adds Artieda. «These strategies collectively reduce the potential for flood-related damage.»

What advice do you have for businesses planning to build in Florida?

«The most critical advice is to partner with a construction firm that deeply understands Florida’s climate and regulatory landscape,» says the Galileus team. «The state’s stringent building codes are in place to safeguard properties against extreme weather, and these regulations are continuously updated. At Galileus, we ensure our clients’ projects are not only fully compliant but also optimized for durability and long-term success.»

Ultimately, Jorge Artieda highlights the importance of balancing safety, efficiency, and aesthetics. «Our goal is to construct buildings that are functional, resilient, and visually appealing—spaces where businesses can thrive, no matter the environmental conditions.»
